Zadroga 9/11 Act Compensation for Construction Workers
The new James Zadroga 9/11 Health & Compensation Act of 2010 could provide substantial monetary awards to construction workers involved in debris removal and other activities who are now ill due to their exposure to toxins at Ground Zero. In addition, it may provide construction workers an opportunity to collect both compensation and medical care for other injuries sustained in the aftermath of the 9/11 tragedy.
Many wrongly believe that the new Zadroga 9/11 Act is only for first responders such as police, firemen and EMT's. In fact, construction workers, clean-up workers and volunteers are all entitled to monetary awards under the newly re-opened 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund. Construction workers fall under the below section of the Zadroga 9/11 law describing those who are covered:
"performed rescue, recovery, demolition, debris cleanup, or other related services in the New York City disaster area in response to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks"
The disaster area definition now includes: "worked or volunteered on site in rescue, recovery, debris cleanup, or related support services in lower Manhattan (south of Canal St.), the Staten Island Landfill, or the barge loading piers.."
